Deep Breath
I’ve been through a lot these past few years, but I have especially been through a lot these past few months. I’ve been wanting to write SOMETHING, but for some reason, I just can’t pull it out of me. I have so much inside, and I can’t get anything out. Everytime I look at a blank page, I freeze. I feel like I have nothing in my head. Throughout the day, I have so many thoughts swirling around in my head, driving me insane, then I look at a blank page and it all goes away, just when I need it. I guess I’ve just been so lost lately…
I have seen this picture titled “Tools of the Trade”, but the reality is that these products are no good for hair. Let’s break it all down.
Dread Wax — Wax doesn’t wash out of dreads, there are tricks for helping to remove wax if you have mistakenly used it previously, but regular soap and water doesn’t do the trick. With wax being trapped in the dread you run a real risk of developing dread rot. Because it is sticky you may find bits of dust and lint sticking to your dreads, making them dirty.
The most important thing to keep in mind though, is that wax is completely unnecessary! It keeps your hair from knotting up, meaning your dreads will never mature.
Dread Butta — Because wax makes your dreads sticky, and maybe a bit smelly, DHHQ introduced Dread Butta to counteract the wax. They claim is is helpful too for dry dreads, but using Aloe Vera is 100% natural. With no chemical additives, so you know just what you are putting in your hair, and that it will wash out, Aloe Vera is a safer and more natural option that DHHQ’s Dread Butta.
Dread Head Dread Soap — Reviews are mixed on DHHQ’s brand of soap. Many people feel it is just an over priced generic residue free shampoo; it gets the job done, but other products are better for a better price. But others have had quite a bit of success with the shampoo, saying it really helps to cool and itchy scalp. Over all though, this is the least harmful of DHHQ’s products.
Locking Accelerator — This is Johnny Clean’s attempt to sell you glorified salt water. The site says that this product helps to open the cuticles of your hair so that all the ridiculous root rubbing you do later is more productive. You could also save your money and find a salt water mixture you can make in your own home, swimming in salty ocean water also had similar effects.
Lock Peppa — Not much to say here, this is another product that claims to make your hair lock up faster. The list of ingredients is a variety of chemicals mixed with things like clay and rosin. But since hair will lock up on its own, this product is pointless.
Dread-Licious — After filling your hair with all the above listed chemicals, and the inability to wash them all out, your hair is bound to start smelling, thus DHHQ introduces Dread-Licious! Perfume for your hair. It also claims to be filled with moisturizing agents, though as pointed out above, Aloe Vera from the plant should be sufficient. If you let your hair dread naturally and without all the chemicals your hair will smell just lovely —assuming you keep it clean— in fact, it should smell just like hair!
Crochet Hook/Loose Hair Tool — While crocheting doesn’t put chemicals in your hair, it still does damage that can take a long time to undo. Every time a hook is pushed or pulled through a section of hair it rips up the hairs you are tugging on, and making the dread weaker.
A final message on this post is that everything up above is unnecessary, your hair will dread without the use of tools, chemicals, or spending any money as long as you are patient and willing to commit.
SO true.
